[ntab Configuration]
The ASUS Ultimate Force series or TUF for short is a product line well known for its budget-friendly gaming laptops. Generally, TUF laptops have good value for money and typically provide 60fps at 1080p for most current titles on medium-to-high graphics settings. The A15 is one of the latest additions to the TUF family which combines a powerful octa-core, sixteen threads processor from AMD with a compact chassis. The configuration reviewed here costs around $1000, but it often goes on sale for a bit less than ~$970.

Asus TUF A15 (FA506IU) display lid
 |
The new ASUS TUF A15 is made primarily of hard plastic with an aluminium lid that has two design options called ‘Fortress Gray’ and ‘Bonfire Black’. The first design option gives the laptop a more professional look while the second one is closer to “a gaming laptop look”. The unit reviewed here is the later version, with the display lid made with brushed aluminium and high angled lines on the sides. The brushed aluminium part is a fingerprint magnet, while the sides have an engravement pattern that prevents fingerprints and provides the lid with a better grip. Overall, holding the laptop with one hand feels relatively secure.
On a positive note, there are no sharp edges, the two hinges seem pretty sturdy, and there is no noticeable flex of the display panel or keyboard deck. While not recommended, this laptop can be opened with one hand. Overall, the laptop is compact, reasonably light, and despite being made out of plastic, it gives a sense of sturdiness. The lack of multiple colours or aggressive branding elements (except for the TUF logo on the back of the lid), makes it a great choice not only for gamers but also for people who need a powerful laptop for professional tasks.

 |
The typing experience feels excellent overall. The travel time is a little bit on the short side, but the keys are large and with enough space between them for a comfortable typing experience. There is also a Numpad, and unlike the previous TUF models or the other budget gaming laptops reviewed so far, it is not merged with the arrow keys, which is a big plus. On the negative side, some keys like Delete, Insert, Home, End are bundled together on a single key and require the use of the Fn key to switch between their functionality.

 |
The keyboard is a single-zone RGB backlit with several patterns and brightness levels that can be changed trough the Armoury Crate application or with the aid of Fn + Up/Down arrow keys. The WASD keys are transparent and painted white on the sides to make them stand out. Also, pressing the Fn + F5 key combination will toggle between Turbo or Performance profile, which can also be done through the Armoury Crate application.

The plastic touchpad uses Windows Precision drivers and has two dedicated left and right-click buttons underneath, with a mushy feeling to them. Unfortunately, the touchpad is not very accurate in its corners but remains reasonably decent for everyday use. Since most gamers do not use the touchpad very often, it is expected from producers to cut corners regarding its quality.
The webcam quality is in line with that of other budget gaming laptops reviewed so far. To put it bluntly, it is acceptable, though not spectacular. It records in 720p at 30 frames per second, and it is good enough for some occasional Skype calls, but anything more professional will require an external webcam.
Sound recordings, however, sound clear without picking any noticeable background noise, making the machine entirely adequate for on-line cooperative gaming.

Gaining access to the internal components of the TUF A15 is relatively easy. Firstly, remove the eleven Philips head screws from the back of the laptop, but keep track of each screw’s location because they come in three different lengths. Secondly, carefully place a prying tool or a plastic card in the space between the plastic bottom cover and the main chassis, then move the prying tool or plastic card all along this separation space. As the prying tool/plastic card moves along this space, it will slowly un-clip the bottom cover from the main chassis. Finally, lift the bottom panel to reveal the laptop’s internal components.

Inside, there is:
- two M.2 SSD/PCIe slot;
- two RAM slots;
- one 2.5-inch storage bay;
- a PCIe slot for the Wi-Fi card;
 |
Asus TUF A15 (FA506IU) M.2 SSD protection |
Regarding the laptop’s internals, there are a few things worth mentioning:
- The WiFi card is placed underneath the first M.2 slot, so in order to gain access to it, the M.2 drive needs to be removed first.
- Not all ASUS TUF A15 models have a 2.5-inch storage bay. The ones with the smaller 48 WHr battery have room for a 2.5-inch drive, while those with the 90 WHr battery, like the FA506IV, trade the storage bay for the larger battery and only get two M.2 slots.

[ntab Ports]
Considering its price, the TUF A15 has a decent selection of peripheral ports. Most of them are placed on the left side, with only one USB 2.0 Type-A on the right side, which, unfortunately, is getting in the way of using a mouse if anything with a cable is plugged into it.
Overall, the laptop has :
- one Ethernet extension connector;
- two USB 3.0 Type-A ports;
- one USB 2.0 Type-A ports;
- one USB 3.0 Type-C port (also known as USB-C 3.2 Gen 1);
- one HDMI 2.0 port;
- a standard 3.5mm jack combo for microphone and headphones or speakers;
- one Kensington lock
- a DC-in power connector;
Also, three USB ports can be quickly filled just by adding an external mouse, a keyboard and a USB flash drive. Of course, the port limitation can be resolved by buying a USB port hub.

[ntab Display]
The TUF A15 reviewed here comes with the Panda LM156LF-2F01 display panel, which is an IPS-type panel. Aside from having great viewing angles, the screen also has a matte coating which combined with its 280 nits luminosity, enables the user to have a good viewing experience outdoors in the shade and a mixed one under direct sunlight. The 144Hz refresh rate is another plus of this laptop’s display. Backed by the GTX 1660 Ti video card and the 4800H octa-core AMD processor, the laptop manages to take advantage of the display’s high refresh rate in most competitive games. On top of that, the panel implements Adaptive-Sync technology, which is similar to FreeSync/G-sync. Adaptive-Sync enables the display to dynamically match the number of frames produced by the video card and thus prevent the image from tearing and stuttering in games. For the model reviewed here, there was no noticeable backlight bleeding.
Unfortunately, despite its high refresh rate, the display has a surprisingly high response time resulting in ghosting in fast-paced games.
Also, the panel has a low colour coverage of only 58.8% sRGB, 40.8% Adobe RGB and 41.9% DCI P3, making it unsuitable for any professional photo or video editing.
Here is a link to the calibrated display profile of the reviewed unit. Because each display is unique, this profile will not perfectly match other displays of the same model. Still, using this profile should give better overall colours.

Asus TUF A15 (FA506IU) cooling system
 |
The TUF A15 uses the same cooling solution as the TUF FX505DU previously reviewed by the Noteb team here. It consists of two average-sized fans, three heat pipes – two of which are shared between the processor and the video card and one which is dedicated to the video card – and three heat sinks. The bottom cover is designed with many honeycomb-shaped grills through which the laptop takes in the fresh air. However, for some reason, most of these bottom grilles are only there for design purposes leaving only a few through which allow the air to flow into the cooling system. The same situation applies for the side and top grills which are only partially functional. It is unclear whether Asus opted to keep most of these grills blocked, for design, sturdiness or cost-cutting reasons, but the laptop’s temperatures would benefit if more of them were open for the air to flow through.
On a side note, having the air intake mainly through the base of the laptop means that its cooling performance can be significantly improved with the help of a cooling pad.
Compared to the previously reviewed ASUS FX505DU model, the exterior of the chassis is noticeable cooler. The keyboard is now comfortable to use even when the internal sensors show temperatures of over 100°C. However, because one of the air exhausts is on the right side, where usually the mouse is, that area gets rather hot and using the mouse can sometimes become unconformable.

 |
All temperature measurements were performed at an ambient temperature of 24.5° C (76.1° F).
Temperatures on idle and heavy load
 |
During the standard 20 minutes AIDA64 stress test (CPU, FPU, cache), the processor reached an average temperature of 87.2°C (188.9°F), with a maximum of 101.1°C (213.9°F). At these temperatures, the processor managed to keep an average frequency of 3.54 GHz, with occasional dips to as low as 1.39 GHz on some of its cores, which is well under AMD’s minimum guaranteed frequency of 2.90 GHz.
CPU clock rates after AIDA64 CPU stress test
 |
In the Unigine Superposition test which puts the GTX 1660 Ti under heavy load for 20 minutes, the GPU hovered around 76°C (168.8°F), with an average frequency of 1540 MHz and a maximum of 1590 MHz. However, the GPU has a somewhat different behaviour while gaming, where it manages to keep a higher average frequency of 1575 MHz, with occasional boosts up to 1800 MHz (e.g. AC: Odyssey, Batman: Arkham Knight). Temperature-wise, the video card never went above 86°C (186.8°F) even in the most demanding games.
Finally, the laptop was tested with the AIDA64 stability test, which is another combined stress test for the video card and processor. The processor heated up until it reached a maximum temperature of 95°C (203°F), at which point the fans started to kick in. Eventually, the processor settled at an average temperature of 79.5°C (175.1°F) with an average frequency of 2.75 GHz and occasional dips to as low as 2.0 GHz. The dedicated graphics card maintained an average clock speed of 1679 MHz with a maximum boost of 1905 MHz. Temperature-wise, the video card hovered between 80 and 81°C (176 – 177.8°F).
The AIDA64+Superposition stress test yielded similar results to the AIDA stability test. In this test, the processor managed a maximum frequency of 3.9-4.1 GHz with a minimum of 2.8-2.9 GHz. The processor’s temperatures stayed the same as in the AIDA64 stability test. The video card’s behaviour was also similar, boosting up to 1800 MHz but keeping an average clock speed of 1500-1590 MHz and an average temperature of 81°C (177.8°F).

CPU-Z + GPU-Z system info
 |
After all these tests conducted by the Noteb review team, it is safe to conclude that the cooling solution implemented by Asus is sufficient for the components featured in this laptop. Even though the processor’s temperature sometimes exceeds 100°C (212°F), the exterior of the chassis remains reasonably cool to the touch and comfortable to use. Furthermore, unlike most Intel-based gaming laptops that thermal throttle when the processor reaches dangerously high temperatures, the Ryzen tries at all cost to keep its maximum boost speed. In all the tests conducted so far, the AMD 4800H processor only drops its frequency to around 1.3 GHz for a split second and then immediately boosts back to 4.2 GHz. This behaviour is surprisingly effective at keeping temperatures in check while minimising performance penalties.
[ntab Noise]
The TUF A15 is a reasonably quiet machine due to its Fan Stop feature implemented by Asus. Fan Stop completely stops the fans from spinning when the laptop is idling or is under light usage, making the laptop suitable to use in classrooms or libraries. Asus also provides its users with three pre-defined fan profiles, Silent, Performance and Turbo. These profiles can be switched by pressing Fn+F5 or from the Armoury Crate app.
Asus TUF A15 (FA506IU) fan profiles
 |
When idling, the fan noise is hardly noticeable, generally remaining at the room’s ambient level of around 25-26 dB. Under intensive usage, however, with Turbo Mode turned on which sets the fans to their maximum speed, the noise level reaches 49-50 dB which will be noticeably loud for most users.

Asus TUF A15 (FA506IU) speakers
 |
Usually, budget gaming laptops have average speakers since most gamers will invest in a quality headset anyway, but the speaker quality of the TUF A15 is surprisingly good. There are two two-watt speakers placed underneath the laptop at a slight angle to avoid muffled audio. The highs are clear, and there is even a fair amount of bass even though there is no subwoofer. Furthermore, turning the volume up to 100% does not result in sound distortions.
Asus TUF A15 (FA506IU) peak volume
 |
[ntab Battery life]
Asus TUF A15 (FA506IU) battery
 |
Since most laptops are used on battery for mundane office activities and web browsing, the laptop was tested using a simulated continuous web browsing session over the WiFi. The browsing session involved checking emails/news, social media and accessing multimedia websites, similar to the behaviour of an average user. The level of brightness was set according to visibility and usability. At 50% brightness, the laptop provided an enjoyable viewing experience. The sound volume was also set to 50%.
Officially, the battery is rated at 48 WHr. However, as it is often the case with most laptops, the total maximum charge is smaller and diminishes over time due to battery wear. The unit reviewed here reported a full charge capacity of 47.8 WHr.
 |
 |
Asus TUF A15 (FA506IU) battery specifications |
Asus TUF A15 (FA506IU) charger |
With its 48 WHr battery, the laptop lasted only 3 hours and 7 minutes. The machine was tested using both Firefox and Edge and yielded similar battery life results regardless of the browser. Also, it is worth mentioning that when playing video games, the battery is discharging even when the laptop is plugged in.
Charging the laptop from 5% to 100% took almost 1 hour and 48 minutes with the 180W power adapter included in the box.
As a side note, there are versions of the ASUS A15, like the FA506IV, which come with a larger 90 WHr battery. These versions will undoubtedly have much better battery life.
[ntab Software]
Even though the laptop was provided without an operating system, there is an application available to download from the Asus official site, and it’s called Armoury Crate. This app lets the users change fan profiles, the colour of the backlit keyboard, while also providing useful system information.
As a side note, one of the most significant drawbacks of the Asus A15 is related to the driver problems between the Nvidia GTX 1660Ti and the display’s Adaptive-Sync technology and high refresh rate. Despite the display having 144Hz, some games will automatically start in 60Hz and switching them to 144Hz will result in a blank screen and force the user to hard reset the laptop. There is no consistency in reproducing this issue. Some games will run in 144Hz only in windowed mode but will crash in full-screen, while others will work without a problem even in full-screen and then some will crash no matter what if set to 144Hz. Turning V-sync on/off does not seem to influence this issue. While this issue is not a deal-breaker, it is undoubtedly annoying and worth taking into consideration.

[ntab Conclusion]
Pros:
- good performance for 1080p gaming;
- sufficient cooling solution;
- competitive pricing;
- above average speakers.
Cons:
- poor colour coverage display;
- high response time display;
- serious driver issues with Adaptive-Sync technology.
As of May 2020, the Asus TUF A15 is one of the best budget gaming laptops on the market. It features a great 7 nm octa-core processor, a potent dedicated graphics card, 144Hz Adaptive-Sync display and higher than average quality speakers. All of these features are packed in a reasonably light and compact chassis. Unfortunately, the laptop is plagued by driver issues when the display is set to 144Hz. Furthermore, the screen has high latency and abysmal colour coverage, making it hardly acceptable for any professional content creator.
