Since 2018, most gaming laptops come with a Full HD IPS-type 144Hz display. We want to elaborate a bit on these displays.

Up until March 2019, all laptops that have displays with the following specifications:

Size 15.4 – 15.6 inch
Resolution: 1920 x 1080 (FullHD)
Technology: IPS-type
Refresh Rate: 144Hz
sRGB: > 90%

Use one of the following displays in various revisions:
– AUO B156HAN
– LG LP156WFG-SPF2
– BOE NV156FHM-N4G/K

Currently, most gaming laptops use the AUO B156HAN08.x . The screen has excellent grey to grey response time, which, depending on revision, can be as low as 7-8ms (though never 3ms as some retailers claim). The response time may also vary a bit between screens of the same revision, but generally, it stays below 10ms.

Unfortunately, while the display has decent colour gamut (around 90% sRGB), its colour accuracy is not that great compared to other laptop displays. A major issue with the AUO is the screen bleeding, which is common with this model and hard to avoid.

The LG LP156WFG-SPF2 / LGD05C0 can only be found in a handful of laptops. It has a slightly higher response time of around 13-16ms, but it has better colour gamut (about 95% sRGB), much better colour accuracy and generally less screen bleeding. As of May 2019, LG has an additional version of this display on the market, the LP156WFG-SPK1 / LGD05FE. Unlike the LP156WFG-SPF2, this version has a slightly higher response time of around 14-16ms, the same 95% sRGB colour gamut but improved colour accuracy.

The BOE NV156FHM-N4G is rarely found in gaming laptops because of its high response time (16-24ms) and uses PWM to control its brightness. BOE has a newer revision of this display (BOE NV156FHM-N4K) which just entered production in December 2018. The latest version no longer uses PWM and has a colour gamut of slightly over 90% sRGB, which brings it on par with the other 144Hz displays on the market. Reviews indicate it has 10-11 ms response time.
