Who is Clevo?

Clevo is a Taiwanese company that has been making laptops for over 20 years. They first started making laptops in the early 90s and since then, they have specialised in custom-made laptops, especially gaming and business laptops.

Unlike other big brands such as Dell, HP, Lenovo or Apple who design their laptops and then outsource their production to Chinese companies specialised in manufacturing laptops, Clevo is both the designer and manufacturer of its laptops.

However, Clevo does not sell laptops directly. Clevo makes the sub-assemblies of its laptops. They make the motherboard, video card, and chassis and put all of it together in a semi-finished laptop called a barebone.

Clevo barebones are bought by laptop resellers around the world, such a Sager, HIDevolution, OriginPC, mysn.de, pcspecialist.co.uk and many more. These resellers then assemble the final laptop based on the configuration requested by the customer. They add the RAM, storage, wireless card, install the operating system and test the device. They are also responsible for warranty and customer support.

Since Clevo sells only through resellers, Clevo as a brand is rarely mentioned. Usually, resellers rebrand the Clevo notebooks with their own names and logos.

In the early 2000s, gaming laptops were a niche market and Clevo was the main supplier of gaming laptops in the world. Clevo made all Alienware laptops before Dell bought Alienware. Same for VoodooPC, before HP bought them.

Right now, every major laptop brand has its own gaming laptops in its portfolio, but despite the diversity of gaming laptops today, Clevo has survived thanks to its reputation among laptop enthusiasts.

Thus, when you buy a Clevo, you do not buy from a little-known brand that just made it to the market; you are buying from a company with a long-standing tradition in making gaming laptops.
